I am proud to say that Fair Oaks Ranch Swim Team has a fine reputation of outstanding parent volunteers among the teams in Division one. We are one of the few teams whose parents step up every time, and have even stepped in to help other teams at the last minute when they are lacking a crucial official, thus allowing those kids to swim as well.
Let us know if you would like to sign up now.
Timers: Fun Spot! We need 9 parents for each half of the swim meet, so a total of 18 per swim meet. You will stand at the end of a swim lane and use a stop watch to record the beginning and end of the race. It the best place to be if you want to see the race.
Runner: Another name for Gopher! Basically the runner takes all the timers sheets to the scorekeepers. Handles all other communication issues that arise where we need someone to "run" to find a coach, parent etc. Takes water to the officials. We need one per half, two for a meet. This position is only for a home meet.
Event Tracker (also called Flipper): This volunteer gets to SIT next to the starter and turn the event cards so that all parents and swimmers know what event is swimming. We need one per half. Only needed at a home meet.
Starter: This is the official in charge of the meet. He/She controls the pace of the meet, (so you need to like speed!), and starts each race by announcing it and giving the cue to go. Only needed at a home meet.
THESE NEXT 2 POSITIONS ARE CRUCIAL FOR ALL MEETS HOME AND AWAY
Age Group Parents: We need parents who are "Take Charge" people to sit with each age group and ensure that the kids stay with their group and get to their races on time. 2 parents per group is a must! Usually we need 10-12 parents.
Bull Pen: This is one parent per half who organizes the swimmers on the bench and makes sure they sit there until they are called for their race. We normally have 4-5 races on the bench ready to go to the starting blocks.
The following positions do require that you attend one Officials class. We will have the specifics in a few weeks. They normally offer it at 3 times on different Saturdays. It takes aprox. 2 hours. These positions are critical because we cannot have a race without them.
Stroke and Turn Judge: You will walk the pool and ensure that the swimmers are performing the strokes legally.
Referee: The referee is the go-to guy who referees the meet and makes judgment calls on disputed races. We need one per half.
